Comment policy discussion
Posted by: ACE on March 16, 2009 at 2:16PM PST
If you're familiar with our policies, you know that we don't allow "usernames that attempt to misrepresent your identity or impersonate any person."

There are users who register a profile similar to that of an established user in an attempt to antagonize them. This is a childish thing to do. But our users are smart -- they recognize these "sock puppets" and usually call them out on it.

Our impersonation policy is about making sure people don't register profiles that claim people's real identities, such as a local mayor or someone recently in the news. There are a few other things that qualify as impersonation, but in general if you're using an anonymous username to begin with you're not protected from impersonation.

In addition, avatar images are only protected from duplication if you hold the rights to use them, such as a photo of you, a drawing you made, etc. If it's simply an image you found online, you can't lay exclusive claim to it.

If someone does register a profile to mock yours, feel flattered and wait it out. These "sock puppets" lose their luster faster than a Christmas toy on Dec. 27.
